The University recognizes that ODL is a veritable alternative to increase access to higher education in both developed and developing countries thereby providing unique opportunities to all lifelong learners.

The management of Distance Learning Institute (DLI), University of Lagos, welcomes your desire to study at the University of First Choice. To start with, we would like you to understand how the institute, DLI, runs.

We would like you to, please bear it in mind that here, we run distance learning and not part-time programmes. There is a great difference between distance learning and part-time programmes even though both programmes are designed for people who are working and studying at the same time.

However, while part-time students attend classes on weekly or week-end basis, distance learners study mainly on their own without necessarily attending classes physically or taking lectures in a classroom. Distance Learners are directly in touch with the University/institute, Course Advisers, E-tutors, Student-Learner Support Staff, Guidance Counsellors and other instructors for online and offline interactions.
In addition to the above information, Kindly note that as a distance learner, you will engage in scheduled meetings for tutorial and group work interaction with your peers.

So, in DLI, our mode of delivery is as follows:
• We leverage on the current technology and various devices such as the laptop, palmtop, ipad, ipod, android, internet, blackberry, social media, etc., to deliver programme contents to our students.
• We use a combination of online and offline activities (blended approach) for content delivery. Our course materials are delivered in formats like prints, DVDs/CDs, video clips, e- learning, online interactions, etc.
• There is little face- to- face contact with facilitators except during scheduled meetings and the writing of end of session exams.
• Computer Based Test (CBT) is employed while writing some of the exams.
• Adequate provisions are made for learners support services where students interact with information officers, guidance counsellors, course advisers, etc.

Also, note that you will participate in an ODL induction course and be certified ODL ‘compliant’ before you can be offered admission. The course, called Applicants’ Induction Course, is aimed at preparing you to be ODL compliant if eventually admitted.
Below is all you need to know about the Applicants’ Induction Course.

APPLICANT INDUCTION COURSE (AIC).
This course (AIC) is made up of services that are specially and specifically designed for various applicants seeking admission into different programmes of DLI. It is NUC approved. The main idea here, is to introduce the applicants to what the distance learning is all about. It is not a gain saying that distance education in Nigeria is a new phenomenon. Many do not have a clear understanding of what it is all about.
The main components of AIC are as indicated below:
1. The course is compulsory for all applicants.
2. You will come for face-to-face interaction for 1 day or 8 hours when the contents of the course would be explained to you.
3. Provisions have been made at DLI e-Resource Centre for the machines/systems there to be used for the face-to-face/offline interaction.
4. The contents of the course are on DVD. This will be given to respective applicants for further studies.
6. When admitted, you can then easily use DLI e- Resource Centre facilities for your online or offline activities.
